Hanshin Expressway Large-scale Repair Project
Steel Girder End：Corrosion
Corrosion by Water Infiltration from Expansion Joints
Expansion joints are provided at connections of bridge girders.
When those joints are deteriorated to cause deformation or cracking, rainwater on the road permeates through the ends of the bridge girders to cause rusting or corrosion at steel girder ends.
For girder ends of bridges built many years ago in particular, no sufficient space for maintenance was provided in the first place.
Therefore, there occur cases where steel corrosion has been seriously progressed inside.
If this happens, large-scale repair is necessary, such as one that should ensure compliance with the current standard.
