Toll Collection Management
The Hanshin Expressway(HEX) manages toll collection at toll gates: receiving tolls in cash, instructing toll collecting staff and monitoring ETC are conducted together. This category of staff is significantly important, as they represent Hanshin Expressway towards our customers.
ETC promotions in Hanshin Expressway
HEX began to carry out the ETC system in 2001. By 2012 approximately 90% of our customers use ETC. In order to boost up ETC use, we have worked on active promotions, as increasing the number of ETC lanes and supporting ETC onboard unit purchase.
Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system
Japanese ETC system enables customers to pay without stopping at toll gates. Firstly, insert your
IC card containing individual information into your ETC on-board unit. Once the ETC card (or IC card) containing individual information is inserted into the ETC onboard unit, the wireless communication system provided by antennas installed on toll booths automatically records necessary information, including tolls, both on our computer system and on IC cards.

Positive effects of ETC introduction
The introduction of ETC system has proved many effects on both our customers and the Hanshin Expressway, mainly as following:
- Alleviating traffic congestion at toll booths
- Common usability through most of Japanese toll roads
- Reducing vehicle emission gases around toll booths
- Reducing operating costs
- Flexible charge setup
